Mid-Stream

I stopped mid-stream to…

I’m sorry, what was I saying?  Either my soon to be 50 year old mind has started losing some of its focus or I’ve developed ADD.  Regardless, I get distracted more easily these days and perhaps that’s why my writing has been scarce.

Fortunately I do have some things to write about.  I’ve been gigging, fly fishing and mountain biking…at least a little.  I’ve even had the opportunity to combine some of these activities, although playing the blues harp while mountain biking is not recommended.

Back in January, I set some goals…not resolutions, those are for “reso” losers…I set real goals. Here we are mid-stream 2013 and I thought it would be a great idea to stop and assess my goals for the year.  I set goals in the following areas, beer drinking, fly fishing and mileage (either hiking or biking or paddling).

Here is where I stand on Beer:

Goal
Mid-Stream Status
Pints
365
one per day
Already met!
New
6
new brews not had before
Already met!
States
3
drink beers in at least this many states
So far 2 states…one more to go
Tour
2
local breweries
Toured one…one more to go

I simply need one more brewery tour and to drink a beer in one more state to meet my 2013 goals.

Here is where I stand on fly fishing:

Goal
Mid-Stream Status
Fly Fishing
150
hours
51 hours…I’m behind!
Species
10
species on the fly
12 different species…met!
Water
8
flyfish this many different waters or more
8…met!
New
1
new fish species on fly or 1 new water
3 new waters…no new species

I’m a little behind on the number of hours fished.  Quite simply we had a ridiculously cold spring and a very wet early summer and that has hindered some trips.  However, summer carp, New River smallies and Eno River largies will definitely help me get caught up on this one.  Plus I know there will be a gig or two at the beach this fall, which will equate to some coastal fly fishing.

So far this year I’ve caught the following species on the fly…brown trout, rainbow trout, largemouth bass, bluegill, shellcracker, redbreast sunfish, river chub, flathead catfish, green sunfish, Roanoke bass, rock bass, and brook trout.

Out of the 8 waters I’ve fished this year thus far, three new ones were added to my list.  All three were trout waters from Western NC and include Laurel Creek, Linville River and Elk River.

Here is where I stand on mileage:

Goal
Miles
Mid-Stream
Hiking
300
98
Mountain Biking
430
275
Cyclocross Biking
550
281
Paddling
20
2
TOTAL
1300
656

Basically I set a goal of 1300 miles either hiking, biking or paddling.  My preference is mountain biking of course but the cyclocross bike is my fishing bike as well.  I’m just over half way there.  The weather has impacted a lot mountain biking with trail closures due to wet weather.  Also…I had a 50-mile backpacking trip on the books that won’t happen this year, so I’m making up for that elsewhere.  As far as paddling, I had hope to have already purchased some new kayaks for fishing, but alas keeping my truck running used up those funds.  I’m now looking seriously at a fishing SUP (stand up paddle board), so maybe I’ll get some paddling in yet.  If not, I will simply add mileage on the bike or hike.
